For the Chicken:
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 eggs, beaten
- ¼ cup water
- 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Orange Sauce:
- 1 cup fresh orange juice (from about 3 oranges)
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- ¼ cup honey (or brown sugar)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (for extra flavor)
For Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions
Instructions
Step 1: Coat the Chicken
- In a bowl, mix cornstarch, flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with ¼ cup water.
- Dip each chicken piece into the egg mixture, then coat in the cornstarch-flour mixture. Shake off excess.
Step 2: Fry the Chicken
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the chicken in batches for 4-5 minutes per batch, until golden and crispy.
- Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
Step 3: Make the Orange Sauce
- In a saucepan over medium heat, add orange juice, orange zest, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
- Bring to a gentle simmer, then stir in the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water).
- Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously, until the sauce thickens.
Step 4: Toss the Chicken in the Sauce
- Reduce heat to low and add the fried chicken pieces to the sauce.
- Toss until fully coated and glossy.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
- Serve immediately with steamed rice, noodles, or stir-fried veggies.
