Scale
For the Dough:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Garlic Butter Coating:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (or fresh, finely chopped)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
For Garnish (Optional):
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Extra chopped parsley
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy (this means the yeast is activated).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix with a wooden spoon or stand mixer with a dough hook until the dough comes together.
- Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (If using a stand mixer, knead for about 5 minutes on medium speed.)
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Shape the Garlic Knots
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface.
- Roll the dough into a 12-inch log and cut it into 12 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope, then tie it into a knot.
- Place the knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let them rest for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Prepare the Garlic Butter Coating
- While the knots are resting, melt the butter in a saucepan or microwave.
- Stir in minced garlic, oregano, parsley, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to enhance the flavors.
Step 4: Bake the Garlic Knots
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the garlic knots with half of the garlic butter mixture.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 5: Finish with Garlic Butter and Serve
- Remove the knots from the oven and immediately brush with the remaining garlic butter.
- Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and extra parsley, if desired.
- Serve warm with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
