Cheddar and Turkey Bacon Irish Soda Bread

  • Author: Luna
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf (8-10 slices) 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup cooked turkey bacon, crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary (optional, for a herby touch)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Cook the Turkey Bacon

  1. In a pan over medium heat, cook the turkey bacon until crispy.

  2. Let it cool slightly, then chop or crumble it into small pieces.

Step 3: Prepare the Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and garlic powder.

  2. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled turkey bacon, ensuring they’re evenly distributed.

Step 4: Add the Wet Ingredients

  1. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.

  2. Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter, then stir until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 5: Knead the Dough

  1. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn out the dough.

  2. Knead gently for 1-2 minutes, just until it holds together. Avoid over-kneading!

Step 6: Shape & Score the Dough

  1. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.

  2. Use a sharp knife to cut an “X” on top, which helps the bread bake evenly.

Step 7: Bake the Bread

  1. Place the bread in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.

  2. The bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8: Cool & Serve

  1. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

  2. Enjoy warm with butter, soup, or as a sandwich base!
