Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups buttermilk
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- ½ cup cooked turkey bacon, crumbled
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary (optional, for a herby touch)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
-
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
Step 2: Cook the Turkey Bacon
-
In a pan over medium heat, cook the turkey bacon until crispy.
-
Let it cool slightly, then chop or crumble it into small pieces.
Step 3: Prepare the Dry Ingredients
-
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and garlic powder.
-
Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled turkey bacon, ensuring they’re evenly distributed.
Step 4: Add the Wet Ingredients
-
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
-
Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter, then stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Step 5: Knead the Dough
-
Lightly flour a clean surface and turn out the dough.
-
Knead gently for 1-2 minutes, just until it holds together. Avoid over-kneading!
Step 6: Shape & Score the Dough
-
Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Use a sharp knife to cut an “X” on top, which helps the bread bake evenly.
Step 7: Bake the Bread
-
Place the bread in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.
-
The bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Step 8: Cool & Serve
-
Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
-
Enjoy warm with butter, soup, or as a sandwich base!
