Ingredients
-
For the Biscuit Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk (or whole milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar)
-
For the Beef Mixture:
- ½ pound ground beef
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
-
Cheese & Butter:
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Pour the melted butter into an 8×8-inch or 9×9-inch baking dish, ensuring it coats the bottom evenly. Set aside while you prepare the dough and filling.
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula. Season with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and dried oregano. Stir everything together and cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar. Pour in the buttermilk and gently mix until just combined. The dough will be thick and slightly sticky—avoid overmixing, as this can make the biscuits dense.
Gently fold the cooked ground beef and shredded cheddar cheese into the biscuit dough, mixing just until evenly distributed.
Transfer the biscuit dough into the prepared buttered baking dish, spreading it evenly. Use a spatula or lightly greased hands to press it into an even layer. The dough will be soft but will bake into fluffy, pull-apart biscuits.
Using a butter knife, gently score the dough into 9 squares (this helps with easy cutting after baking). The butter may pool around the edges—this is what creates the crispy, buttery crust!
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are crispy. If the top starts browning too quickly, loosely cover with foil for the last 5 minutes of baking.
Remove from the oven and let the biscuits cool slightly before cutting along the scored lines. Sprinkle with chopped green onions for a fresh finish. Serve warm and enjoy!
