Green Onion Garlic Butter Bread Loaf

  • Author: Luna
  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Yield: 1 large loaf (or 10-12 slices) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bread Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

For the Garlic Butter Mixture:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for heat)
  • ½ cup green onions, finely chopped

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy (this ensures the yeast is activated).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Add the egg, softened butter, and yeast mixture, then mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. (Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.)
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Make the Garlic Butter Mixture

  1. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, oregano (if using), and chili flakes.
  2. Stir in the chopped green onions. Set aside.

Step 3: Shape the Bread

  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle (about 12×8 inches) on a floured surface.
  2. Brush the garlic butter mixture evenly over the dough.
  3. Roll the dough tightly from the shorter end, forming a log.
  4. Place the rolled dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan, seam side down.
  5. Cover with a towel and let it rise for another 20 minutes.

Step 4: Bake the Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brush the top of the loaf with extra garlic butter for a golden, flavorful crust.
  3. Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  4. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Slice and serve warm with extra butter or a side of soup.
  2. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
