Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup whole milk
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Optional Dipping Sauces:
- Chocolate sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Strawberry or raspberry sauce
- Whipped cream
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add in the milk, water, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking continuously until you get a smooth, lump-free batter with a pancake-like consistency.
In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the temperature, as this ensures the fries cook evenly and crisply.
Transfer the batter into a piping bag with a large round tip (or use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off). Once the oil is hot, carefully pipe the batter into the oil in straight lines, about 4-5 inches long. Fry 4-5 fries at a time to avoid overcrowding.
Let the fries cook for 1-2 minutes per side, flipping them with tongs or a slotted spoon. They should turn a golden-brown color and puff up slightly. Once done, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
While the funnel cake fries are still warm, dust them generously with powdered sugar. For extra flavor, you can also sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top for a fun twist.
Arrange the fries on a serving plate and pair them with your favorite dipping sauces like chocolate, caramel, or fruit preserves. Serve immediately and enjoy!
